Limousin Breeders Gather for Banquet
The South Dakota Limousin Association held their annual banquet and benefit auction on February 1 at the Ramkota Hotel in Rapid City. Limousin seedstock and commercial producers from the host state of South Dakota as well as breeders from IA, MN, NE, WY and ND came to this fun event which was held in conjunction with the Black Hills Stock Show. A highlight of this year’s banquet was the wine tasting experience hosted by Bruce and Ellen Burdick of Lewellen, Nebraska. They own 17 Ranch Winery, which is at the “front door” of the Nebraska Sandhills. They provided several wines for everyone to taste including four red and three white wines. Following a delicious prime rib buffet, Chisum Peterson auctioned off a wide variety of items. Among the interesting items were children’s toy baskets, custom jewelry, camping at Ross Lamphere’s campground in Sturgis, a cooler of Limousin beef, and two tickets to the BHSS rodeo. There was a mouth-watering array of food for sale including Shirley’s famous apple pies, salsa, a chocolate chip cookie pizza, and cinnamon rolls. Advertising in several publications in the Midwest, semen, and services from Trans Ova and Hawkeye Breeders were also on the auction. The feature of the evening was the “mystery box”, which was back by popular demand. It was auctioned off three times before the “lucky recipient” came forward to disclose the contents. The South Dakota Limousin Association would like to thank everyone who donated and purchased items at the benefit auction. We appreciate your support!
Thank You
Thanks to Wulf Limousin of Morris, MN, and the Heartland Limousin Association for purchasing the champion and reserve champion female banners respectively at the South Dakota benefit auction on February 1. These awards will be given at the NALJA show in Sioux Falls in July of 2008.

2008 NALJA Show
The theme for the 2008 NALJA show is “Trail to Excellence” and it will be held July 12-18 at the Sioux Empire fairgrounds in Sioux Falls. Mark your calendars for this important event. The South Dakota co-chairmen are Bob Smit and Julie Montagne. Minnesota will be co-hosting the 2008 NALJA show and the chairmen from that state are Lowell Tangen and Roger Potter. There is a need for lots of volunteers to work on this project. Please let one of the chairmen know what you would like to do and they will add your name to one of the committees. “Many hands make light work” as the saying goes, and we need many volunteers from South Dakota, Minnesota and the surrounding states. We are also looking for sponsors for the various banners and awards. There will be approximately 28 division and reserve division awards and 65-70 class winners along with two steer awards (Prospect and Progress). Awards are given for the junior heifer show, the bred-and-owned show, the steer show, and the Lim-Flex show.

Junior News
Kyle Stern is the new Junior Advisor. Upcoming events for South Dakota juniors include the Heartland Regional Show in Spencer, IA June 8-9, the Summer Spotlight in Huron on July 28th and the SD State Fair Open Show on August 31st. We hope to see all of our juniors at these events.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Chisum Peterson of Chamberlain. He was one of four “young breed reps” from the Black Hills Stock Show (BHSS) that were featured in the January 24th issue of The Cattle Business Weekly newspaper. Kadee Hande, Livestock Coordinator of the BHSS says that she relies on the help of many to make the cattle events happen. According to Hande, the Stock Show has proven to be a long-lasting annual event. Getting the young producers involved now will help them stay active in the years to come. This is the fourth year that Chisum has served as a Limousin breed representative. He says that he was fortunate to have the help of Ross Lamphere and Dugan Stewart when he arrived on the scene. He says that he learned from these older guys who had served in that capacity for many years. Many of the breed reps, like Peterson, got involved with the BHSS because of their family’s history at the show. They spent their youth attending or showing cattle at the winter livestock event and are consignors themselves. The breed reps work hard throughout the BHSS. The goals are the same whether they have many years of experience or are just getting started. Chisum said, “We all want to have a successful BHSS, but I think we bring something new to the show.”
